Fantasy Book Review

Fantasy Book Review

Book review 1

Lyonesse- Book 1

Also know as Suldrun’s Garden

Jack Vance

This was a truly lovely book to read. a wonderful romantic fantasy novel set in the legendary sunken isle of Lyonesse that lays off the isles of Scilly and south west of Cornwall, England. The country was the birth place of the Knight, Tristan and used in the tales of King Arthur. The isles was also a part of Celtic mythology. In this particular story Lyonesse is set in the European dark ages.

The story revolves around a young princesses desire to be alone in her ’secret garden’ and the her (Suldrun) defiance against her domineering unloving father, King Casmir. Casmir plays the antagonistic of the story, his main desire is to marry his daughter off to a prince that would be helpful in his plan to rule the empire. When Suldrun runs from a dinner with a very promising suitor, Casmir locks her in her garden telling her to live her life there. The garden barred on two sides by a steep ravine, the third by a wall and a locked gate, and the fourth by the sea

Suldrun loves the idea and lives happily alone in her garden for a while. That is until a young man is washed ashore in her garden. This is where our story begins…….

I’m a sucker for a good fantasy novel and this one was great, it was honestly a fantastic read. I found it really hard to get in to at first it seemed to jump around a lot and I was having trouble remembering all of the names. Thank goodness it was only the first few chapters. The chapters were only a, sort of, introduction to all the character. Then the story thinned out in to the main story which were split following around three or four different characters.

The book wasn’t the sort of fantasy novel that I would usually read (my boyfriend lent the book that I was suppose to review to his work mate, so he brought me this instead) but it was great all the same. The ’fantasy’ side of it was subtle and not in your face as other fantasy novels are. It was still full of fairies, witches and wizards but I was concentrating on the story line that I hardly noticed. The book started as a love story and finished an exciting action story. I absolutely loved it, full of heart break and happiness. it’s a part of a trilogy which I will also be reading and reviewing but it can easily be read on its own. I would recommend this book to everyone. I think all ages would love it.

About me!!

Well as I have just said my name is Kayleigh. I’m 22 years old. I live in London England . I have just recently had my first baby boy Oscar . He was born February this year. I live with my partner who is a wonderful man who makes me ridiculously happy. I’ve always been a fan of writing but have not yet finished any of the millions of books that I have started to write… I love reading, I mostly read fantasy books but I’m open to all sorts of literature. I have a lot of hobbies which include… Obviously reading and writing but also playing guitar, listening to music, watching movies and of course spending a silly amount of money on make-up and hair products.

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight

Me and my partner went to see this film twice. That might not seem like anything special, but I’m not the kind of person that goes to see the same film more than once. I’ve actually ridiculed friends for doing the exact same thing. It was just that the first time wasn’t nearly enough. The film was fast paced and had your eyes darting around the screen every second. It was filled to the brim with storylines, but it was never confusing. It was the best film I’ve seen in a long time, probably in the top 10 best films ever!! Batman is as dark as ever and Bruce Wayne is just as a womaniser as ever. Bruce is so cool he doesn’t even take his hands out of his pockets to kiss his true love… Classy. The film, as a whole, is full of fantastically quotable quotes, ‘What doesn’t kill you only makes you… Stranger’ you’ll find your self quoting the film for a weeks and weeks after. One of my most memorable moments is seeing the Joker standing out side the hospital wearing a nurses outfit. It’s a great little scene its not so much funny as it is freaky, it made all the hair on the back of my neck stand on edge. The film is a whooping 2 and a half hours long but doesn’t seem it. I thought the film was going to finish a couple of times only to discover another hour or so. The Joker is a fantastic character, he stays very true to the graphic novels. We also get to see a fair amount of ‘Two face‘. He play a great bad guy. You never know what is going to happen because he leaves everything to chance. The film will blow your socks off, as it did me, twice!. It was, also, really refreshing to watch a film that had no sex in it. I know I sound like an old fart (I’m really not, I’m only 21) but it was nice to watch an action film the was just a whole lot of action. I got to watch the brilliant, breath taking scenes, like Batman’s amazing swoop across the Hong Kong’s skyline, without getting distracted by a random pair of breasts bouncing across the screen. I got to appreciate all of the film, and how far film graphics have come. You honestly couldn’t tell if things where CGI or not. You were left sitting there saying to yourself ’that cant have been real’ but questioning yourself every step of the way. It was shot so well I was literary sitting on the edge of my seat!! I would recommend this piece of art to everyone. Though I thought the rating for the film (12A) was a bit questionable, the scenes were all violent and quite graphic, the only reason I could think of the rating being so low, was that it didn’t have any sex scenes and hardly any swearing… I suppose that’s the parents call though…. GO SEE IT!!
